How to Size a PA System for a Room: Offices, Schools and Halls in India

How many speakers and how much power does your room need? A practical way to size a PA system for offices, classrooms, factories, halls and outdoor areas in India.

Size a PA system by area, ceiling height, background noise and use (speech or music). Use enough speakers for even coverage, then choose amplifier power to match the speakers with headroom. Zone the building so messages reach the right people. This guide is from UBM (Universal Business Machines), a Mumbai-based pro AV distributor since 1997.

"How do I size a PA to a room?" is a classic r/livesound question, and Indian offices, schools and factories face it every time they add a paging or announcement system.

The four inputs

  • Area and shape: square metres and how the space is divided.
  • Ceiling height: decides ceiling speakers versus wall or horn speakers.
  • Background noise: a factory floor needs far more level than an office.
  • Use: speech only, background music, or emergency paging.

Speakers first, then power

  • Offices and classrooms: ceiling speakers spaced so their coverage overlaps.
  • Corridors: wall speakers at regular intervals.
  • Factories and outdoor areas: horn speakers that cut through noise.
  • Halls: column or installed speakers designed for coverage.

Once the speaker count is known, choose a mixer-amplifier with power for all speakers plus headroom.

Zone the building

Divide the site into zones such as floors, departments, canteen and outdoor areas, so announcements reach the right people without disturbing others.

More speakers at lower volume almost always sound clearer than a few speakers turned up loud.

Indian considerations

  • Plan for long cable runs on large campuses.
  • Protect equipment from dust and humidity.
  • Add UPS support so paging works during power fluctuations.

UBM designs and supplies TOA and Bose Professional PA systems for Indian offices, campuses and industry. Plan your PA system.
