Choose an LCD video wall for close viewing, control rooms and tighter budgets; choose a fine-pitch LED wall for seamless, very bright, large or irregular canvases such as lobbies, stages and auditoriums. This guide is from UBM (Universal Business Machines), a Mumbai-based pro AV distributor since 1997.
Video walls are one of the most visible investments an organisation makes. Choosing between LED and LCD comes down to viewing distance, brightness, seams and budget.
How each technology works
- LCD video walls tile several narrow-bezel commercial displays. A processor spreads content across them.
- LED video walls are built from modular LED cabinets with no bezels, so the image is completely seamless.
Key differences
- Seams, LCD walls show thin lines between panels; LED walls have none.
- Brightness, LED is far brighter, ideal for atriums and spaces with daylight.
- Viewing distance, LCD looks crisp up close; LED needs the right *pixel pitch* for your distance.
- Size and shape, LED scales to almost any size or aspect ratio; LCD is limited to multiples of a panel.
- Cost, for small walls viewed up close, LCD usually costs less; for large canvases LED becomes competitive.
Choosing the right pixel pitch
Pixel pitch is the distance between LED pixels in millimetres. A smaller pitch means a sharper image up close, at a higher cost.
Practical rule: the closest comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly the pixel pitch in millimetres. A 2.5 mm wall looks good from about 2.5 metres and beyond.
Where each one fits best
- LCD: command and control rooms, boardrooms, retail shelves, close-viewing signage.
- LED: corporate lobbies, auditorium stages, experience centres, malls and large events.
What drives video wall cost
- Total area and pixel pitch (LED) or panel count and bezel width (LCD).
- Processor and content-management requirements.
- Mounting structure, power and cooling.
- Installation, calibration and support terms.

FAQs
Is an LED video wall better than an LCD video wall?
Neither is always better. LED is seamless and brighter for large spaces; LCD is sharper up close and often more cost-effective for smaller walls.
What pixel pitch do I need for an LED video wall?
As a rule of thumb, the pixel pitch in millimetres roughly equals the minimum viewing distance in metres.
