A smart classroom needs an interactive display, wireless sharing, clear audio, a document camera, proper mounting and teacher training. Cost is driven mostly by display type and size, room count, audio needs and installation complexity, not by the brand logo. This guide is from UBM (Universal Business Machines), a Mumbai-based pro AV distributor since 1997.
Schools and colleges across India are moving from chalkboards to interactive learning. But a smart classroom only works if teachers use it every day. This guide covers what you actually need, what drives cost, and the mistakes we see most often after more than 25 years of supplying classroom technology.
The smart classroom equipment list
- Interactive display, an interactive flat panel (65" to 86") or an interactive projector. This is the heart of the room.
- Wireless presentation, lets teachers and students share from laptops, tablets and phones without cables.
- Audio, built-in speakers are fine for small rooms; larger rooms need wall speakers or a voice-lift microphone so the back row hears clearly.
- Document camera, shows books, worksheets and experiments in detail.
- Mounting, cabling and power, wall or trolley mounts, concealed cabling and surge protection.
- Teacher training, the most skipped and most important item on the list.
Interactive flat panel or interactive projector?
Interactive flat panels are bright, low-maintenance and excellent in rooms with lots of daylight. Interactive laser projectors deliver a much larger image for the money, ideal for bigger rooms and lecture halls where a 75-inch panel feels small from the back.
Rule of thumb: the farthest student should be no more than about six times the image height away from the screen. If a panel is too small for that, consider a projector.
What drives smart class setup cost in India
- Display type and size, the single biggest line item.
- Number of classrooms, standardised roll-outs reduce cost per room.
- Room acoustics and size, determines whether you need extra audio.
- Civil and electrical work, conduits, power points and wall strength.
- Software and content, many panels include education software; content subscriptions are extra.
- Support and warranty, on-site service terms matter over a 5–7 year life.
Rather than chasing the lowest price per panel, compare total cost of ownership: lamp-free laser sources, warranty terms and local service support often save more than a small upfront discount.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a display too small for the room.
- Ignoring audio in classrooms over 40 students.
- Skipping training, so expensive panels become expensive whiteboards.
- Buying from a supplier with no local service capability.

FAQs
What is the minimum equipment for a smart classroom?
At minimum, an interactive display, wireless or wired connectivity for the teacher's device, audible sound for the room size, and training for teachers.
Is an interactive flat panel better than a projector?
Neither is universally better. Panels suit brighter, smaller rooms; projectors give larger images for larger rooms at lower cost per inch.
